2023: YEar IN WORK
120+ shows and almost half the year spent overseas since January. Iāve not had much time to sit and reflect on the body of work Iāve accumulated since then and the past few days have been an overwhelming roller coaster of emotions. Its easy to forget the importance of documenting your experiences and I hope moving forward I can take more pauses next year to breathe and take it in.
Touring has its ups and downs and the hardest part thatās often mentioned between us is all the sacrifices made along the way - birthdays, marriages, funerals and relationships all fall into the category of things missed and on standby until we get home. This year was the first time Iād experienced grief whilst away & I wouldnāt have made it through if it wasnāt for the strong support network around me. Somehow - Iām still working & feeling twice as inspired to capture the world I see in front of me.
Thank you to everyone who made this year possible, hereās a collection of all the work Iāve shot in 365 days.
Dedicated to Ryan Siew & Alex Arthur.

SPEED QLD WEEKENDER

HATE 10 YEAR TOUR
The first big run for the year kicked off in January two days after the Speed QLD weekender. I got an Uber from where we were staying on the Goldy to where a few of the Thy Art crew members were preparing to leave for the first day of pre production. Low and behold the first person I saw was Jed who I somehow hadnāt met before this tour - a person Iām thankful to now know and can call a mentor and brother. We spent that week bullshiting in hotel rooms and psyching eachother up for post show feeds & jamming Jedās ā2000 AS FUCK.ā Spotify playlist he shared.
The tour itself was super easy, stacked shows & a psycho response all round for a record that defined deathcore in Australia. I used to jam this shit all the time in roll call so to be on such a monumental tour was huge. I went into this just trying to nail the energy of the live performance and more of a documentarian approach to shooting the show from start to finish including the lines outside, the cew & people that make up the story of each show. Thank you to Thy Art for having me.

COMEBACK KID & DRAIN
Back to my roots, I was thankful to be able to jump in for three shows right before leaving for the USA. Iād toured with CBK the year prior so It was great to see them again and shoot some shows more in my natural style. This tour also marked the first of two appearances for Drain in Australia for 2023 - a band that had an immediate good response and made my job incredibly easyā¦ Itās hard to not get good shots when a band is that energetic and captivating live.

ROBBER - HOUSE SHOW

USA ROUND #1
The first of two trips to the USA this year. This time it started with the Hate tour supported by Kublai Khan, I AM, Undeath & Justice For The Damned. Thirty something shows, unbelievable hangs & brain smashing riffs non stop every night. Eight years ago I told myself the first run I do with JFTD overseas will be the time when I know Iāve hit the top of my success - despite going over earlier this still felt like a true dream come true moment.
Following this I jumped on a few side shows with Kublai Khan to wrap up filming the āTheory of Mindā music video at LDB Fest in Louisville, Kentucky & then straight into Speedās first US East Coast tour starting in New York at Flatspot World.
This trip also marked the first time filming long form video pieces for Speed which was a challenge to put down the still camera after five weeks of using it as an extension of my body. Itās the first time in years I had been overwhelmingly proud of my work & I owe credit to Jem to push me out of my comfort zone to capture interviews & extra footage Iād normally be too hesitant to get.
Thank you to Isaac & Lydia for housing me for a few weeks in Nashville while I edited the video & to Will in Jersey for the time between.
See you all again soon!
Shoutout Brenny & Kenny

SPEED - NORTH AMERICA TOUR
Featuring Kharma, Regulate & Raw Brigade. This week and a half was truly life changing. The run started in NYC at Flatspot World before heading down the east coast and ending in Toronto. We celebrated Bchans birthday in Chicago, ate a fuck load of good food and ticked off some bucket list shitā¦ the TUI Steps in Baltimore!
I spent most of this run filming for the docco so these are some of the only stills I have from the trip. I came home with a broken lens but it was worth it for how proud I am of that piece. Shoutout Sean, Pat & Ricky!

CANDY & EKULU

REAL BAY SYDNEY SHIT TOUR

Freshly back home and excited to see parts of Australiaās hardcore community that have grown since I was last there. Joined by Speed on this run were two of the Bayās finest - Sunami & Scowl. The interesting thing about this tour was that both bands and Speed are on a similar trajectory and have experienced almost the exact same spike during the pandemic. Three bands on the same wave - an important time that I think will be looked at in future as a defining era of modern hardcore.
I drove for two days from Sydney to Adelaide with the van and trailer filled with merch and gear. Thank you to Phoebe for accompanying me! In front of us Candace was on a solo mission and weād occasionally catch up at servos and for dinner in Hay (a staple stay for this route).
Adelaide was a crazy show, it probably felt the most intense in terms of stage dives and the pit besides BOTM. Iāve been doing shows at Lion Artās for years previously as Fowlers Live and to see it without a barrier and packed was something I never thought was achievable. Props to everyone holding it down over there - Winnerz Circle, Pig Pen Recordsā¦ shoutout Gymbow!
The day after I woke up and lasted about five hours into the drive before I was hit with a crazy wave of an illness. It lasted about three days and all I could do was lay down and try not to get the cold sweats - It wasnāt covid but whatever it was had me fucked up. I donāt remember much of the next three gigs between Melbourne & Newcastle.. Stay Gold was AA and I met a few kids out the front from Albury who were stoked to see their first hardcore show - they even ripped the posters off the inside venue walls at the end! Canberra surprisingly had one of the best energies out of the whole tour - I normally do shows in different genres at The Basement so this crowd of people were completely new to me. I think its going to be a place to keep an eye on the next two years.. since then thereās already been a few new bands pop up and DIY AA shows.
To make things even worse for meā¦ I broke my foot moshing to Ill Natured at the Newcastle show and drove on it for a few days after. I still think it was pretty sick. Alas! I made it through to the end hopping around. Dope shows, plenty of new and excited faces and new friends Iāll have forever. The best parts of this run were hanging with Jaffy, meeting the rest of the Bay crew (Chris, Justin & Danny), Condition One at the Crowbar side show, getting some good van time in & non stop epic riders thanks to Candace (Pepsi Max & Sugar Free Red Bull).

BACK ON THE MAP

END - AUS TOUR

SPEED EU & UK w/ ZULU
Without a doubt, this was the hardest few weeks Iāve had on tour so far. Around four shows in I got a phone call that Ryan had passed away. All I wanted to do was go home but Iām thankful I stayed and pushed through. I wouldnāt have made it if it wasnāt for the support of Speed and letting me grieve in my own time and there wasnāt any pressure to do anything but that. I donāt recall much of filming the last half until Outbreak but somehow we still churned out a video piece that Im proud of.
The biggest takeaways from this run were how epic the DIY scenes are in cities like London, Gothenburg (Sweden) and Paris. I came home with a burning desire to make AA shows happen that feel the same way as Goteburg Hardcore do it, youāll hopefully see more on that in 2024. It was also the first time Speed had done anything like the Euro Festivals & it was an unbelievable experience. We had no idea what to expect and it blew everything out of the park.
Shoutout Lukas for getting us out of there alive!
I canāt wait to come back and do it properly next time.

SPEED USA HARDCORE FESTS

Back in the USA for a few weeks with Speed for Sound & Fury and This Is Hardcore. Hopefully the video from this tour relays how unique every show was sonically and in culture. For a relatively short trip it was jammed packed with crazy experiences. Shoutout to Mesa, AZ for the best gig of the run at The Nileā¦ Downpresser, Day By Day, Skin Ticket & Get A Grip. RIP Cayle Sain. Iām thankful to have met you that night and didnāt hesitate to sweat you for a few seconds. Travis Barker watched Kane play drums!!

VANS KNU SKOOL

SPLINTER - HAMO HEADLINER
Thereās nothing like home. Imagine walking into the Hamo a few minutes before the Knights win to get into the finals for 2023. Everyone is moshing in blue and red stripes. This whole night had one of the craziest energies to a show Iāve ever shot. Its clear the work everyone in SCT had been putting into this community was working & everyone that needed to be there was front and centre. Shoutout Spat Out for a wild set that night - for the people that hadnāt been lucky to see them yet I think that night pushed them forward into everyones end of year playlists. Check out their EP āHeld Underā if you havenāt!

STEEL CITY TERROR
An idea spawned and made possible by Alex. This is a perfect example of a community gaining strength from loss and using it to come together. Every band was flawless, special mentions to Dog Shot and possibly one of the best first sets Iāve experiencedā¦ Feel The Pain. Thank you to everyone who made this possible. It took me two days to edit the full folder and I had to stop multiple times to just sit and soak in what I was looking at. I like to think this group photo is a window just for him to look through and see us all staring back smiling. We love and miss you brother, look at how epic this shit is!

DRAIN & ANXIOUS

SPEED ALL AGES XMAS SHOW
A perfect way to wrap up the year at home. Iām excited for the future of hardcore in Australia & Sydney specifcially. The youth are here and hyped on the culture. This was a well needed step forward in the right direction - shoutout Candace & beastmode! Listen to Compound, Potion, Trenchknife & Shinto and start new bands! See you at a show in 2024! - Ruddsy
